A  Pioneer  History  of   the  John
            Steel(e) Family

John Steel emigrated from Scotland to Nepean Twp. in 1818 with the Richmond
Military Settlement as a non military settler. John Steel was one of the few in the group
who were not soldiers. With him came his wife whose name we have not yet
uncovered, (possibly Catherine) and his two children: Jane born in 1806 in
Dumfriesshire Scotland and John born circa 1809.

The family was settled by the superintendant on a 100 acre crown reserve lot along the
newly created Richmond Road. This lot was numbered 23n concession 5 Rideau Front,
and the family was located there on the 24th of October 1818. This is in the area now
known as Fallowfield. The Steel family was one of the first settlers there, along with their
closest neighbour Lt. Francis Davison an old soldier.

The lot that the Steel family was located on is known to this day to be poor agricultural land, water and rocks were plentiful.   The story of this family and the descedants of John Steele are the subject of this page

The Web page editor acknowledges the work done by John B.Steele of Renfrew, Ontario who did the initial research and upon whose writings some of the

My name is David Clutchey the grandson of Henry Steele who was born in Bristol Twp., Pontiac Cty Quebec. My grandmother's name was Emily Cameron also of Bristol Twp,  Pontiac Cty.

THE STEEL NAME

At some period in time the Steel name became Steele. since there is no evidence as to where, when or why this occured this writer has arbitrarily made the change
after the second generation, That is the children of John Steel and Sarah Odber, with the understanding that it may not be correct.
