THE DAVID CLUTCHEY CASSIE STEELE FAMILY

Cassie Steele was a very unusual lady, extremely talented, she played the piano
even into her ninetieth year.  The fourth daughter of Henry Steele and Emily Cameron she greatly resembled her mother in looks, and she had  a mischievous trait and while not religious she was extremely 'straight laced' to the point of being accused of being the president of the Termperance society.  She was also very protective of her family and forceful in insisting upon their obtaining a good education.  Her talents included being an outstanding ice skater and later in life a figure skating judge of impeccable standards.  Cassie did not ever work outside of the home, being a mother in charge of the household was her role in  life, one she played  remarkably well.  She took an enormous pride in the accomplishments of her children, especially her three daughters, Mattie, Marie and Margaret all of whom had successful professions.  Her two sons David Jr.and Henry were given a little less supervision but still as much love.   David Clutchey Sr. was the husband of Cassie and though he was ten years older he let his wife be the 'boss' of the household.

THE  HAILEYBURY  TRAGEDY
Davey was an electrician and was sent up
to Haileybury by his company where he
met Cassie. After their marriage and the
birth of three children Davey went into
business and had his own electrical
  contracting business when tragedy struck
in the form of one of the worst forest
fires in the history of Northern Ontario
which destroyed the town of Haileybury
and burned out Davey's business. (See  headlines taken from the Owen Sound news-paper clipping  Right: )
    Fortunately all the family members
        escaped with their lives.
Destitute, the family moved to Timmins
          and began a new life

Some Davey Clutchey Sr.  philosophy:
Cassie Steele was a lady of zero tolerance towards alcohol.   Davey who liked an
ocassional beer was always wary of Cassie's extraordinary perception after he might have imbibed.

He said of his wife:   " Cassie could smell up a cat's ass before you could see the cat."

Davey also often said " It doesn't matter to me whether I go to heaven or hell I have got friends in both places."
